George Evans Marital Status: Married to Crystal Duarte who is a member of the Lihue High Class of 1972, Lihue, Kauai Hawaii. Now before anyone asks, I have never been to Hawaii. We have been married for nearly 17 years, in fact it will be 17 years just two weeks before the reunion. We have no children.

Since getting married in September 1989 we have lived in San Leandro and San Francisco California. A job transfer took us to Atlanta Georgia were we lived first in Dunwoody, then Acworth, Norcross, Marietta and finally Smyrna Georgia. Crystal was transferred by her employer, Verizon Wireless, from Alpharetta Georgia to Murfressboro Tennessee in September 2003. Since moving to Tennessee we have lived in Antioch Tennessee.

Occupation: I have worked for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for some 19 years now. Presently I am a Medical Support Assistant for the Veterans Health Administration at the Nashville VA Medical Center. Prior to coming to Nashville I worked for the Veterans Benefits Administration at the San Francisco Regional Office (now the Oakland Regional Office) and the Atlanta Regional Office. My last 9 years in Atlanta I worked on Appeal’s cases, first as a Claims Clerk and then as an Appeals Analyst. As an Appeals Analyst I worked directly with the Board of Veterans Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims in Washington, DC. Since leaving my position in Atlanta, I have received a number of offers to go to work directly for the Board of Veterans Appeals in Washington, DC but after discussing the offers with my wife, I decided to stay in Nashville and not accept the offer.

Life’s Journeys: My 58+ years have taken me down many paths, some of which were good and others were ones that I should never have journeyed down. But then I think a lot of us might have to say that. I have learned that what might seem to be that bright light that it at what seems to be a very short tunnel can turn out to be actually very dim and the time that it takes to reach that light might be many years, in fact it could be many decades.

In my case, that light that I talk about is the light that a lot of us looked at as we graduated from San Leandro High, the light of a Bachelor’s Degree. Most of us thought that in the Spring of 1970 we would have earned that degree. Well in my case things didn’t quite turn out that way. My Spring 1970 ended up being Spring 1993 when I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences. A few years later I went back to school and graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Management.

The years between 1966 and 1987 took me down many different career paths, all of which ended up as dead ends. But the people I met and things I experienced can’t be taken away from me. As a result of some of my life’s journeys I have found myself listed in a number of publications. Between about 1975-1978 I was listed as having contributed much needed information for the Comic Book Price Guide published by Robert M. Overstreet.

I was a co-contributor of an Article published in the Comic Buyers Guide in the 1980’s. Around 1992, I was quoted in the publication called Mat Watch one week for the best off air line of the week. It was a line referencing Ted Turner’s purchasing of Hanna-Barbera and a then Ted Turner owned operation called WCW (World Championship Wrestling). Life’s Journeys:

People met along the way. In the years since we graduated I have met some famous and some infamous people. Among the famous that I have met were Former President of the United States and Governor of California Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy. I also met Comedian Robin Williams. The most infamous person that I met was Melvin Yu, who is best known for the Golden Dragon Massacre in San Francisco. What has happened to me in the last five years as well as what the present and future hold for me: The last five years have not been totally kind to me but it has also shown me that life can be short and that I should take things one day at a time.

Please take what I write next as not a request for sympathy but instead as a dose of reality. I got a “medical wake up call” in late 2003/early 2004 when I was diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Steato-Hepatitis, which is also called NASH. Basically what this means is that I have Non-Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the liver and Non-Viral Hepatitis. At the same time that I was undergoing a procedure to verify the diagnosis, a second problem was diagnosed. I was found to have esophageal varacies. Had they not been discovered, one of the vessels might have burst and I could have easily died. I give praise to the Lord for placing me at my present position so that I can see what happens when you don’t get diagnosed and these things happen. I hope to continue working as long as my body will let me, knowing that at sometime in the future I am going to be needing a Liver Transplant….let’s keep praying that it is much later than sooner.

Retirement and plans for retirement: Well keeping in mind that my wife is some 7 years younger than me and that she wants to work until she is 70 means that I might be a long ways from retirement. Well if my plans remain the same I will be doing a lot of work using the computer as I continue to do a genealogical research on my late father’s family. I have possible hope to actually meet, in person, my Dad’s half-brother (s) as well as there children. The research that I have previously done has allowed me to meet a first cousin of my Dad’s as well as a number of his second cousins. I met these family members on my Dad’s Father’s side of the family after my Dad died in 1993.

My Dad never knew his father, hence my Dad never met any of his Evans relatives. Besides doing the genealogy research, I intend to dabble in sports cards by either setting up at card shows or using E-Bay. George Evans Now residing in Antioch TN in the heart of the Tennessee Valley

After graduating from Cal State Hayward with BS in Math and Elementary and Secondary teaching credentials, I taught math at Newark's Memorial High School for 4 years, then moved to Massachussetts because of my ex's job and taught math there for another 4 years. Another move took me to Colorado Springs, where I began working as a secretary for Digital Equipment Corporation (later Compac, then HP) to learn their OA products in hopes of joining their Training Department. That didn't happen, although I did create and teach several OA courses for the other administrators. Another move brought me back to the Bay Area, and unfortunately a divorce just short of my 19th anniversary.

Still working for Digital Equipment, I was accepted into a technical training program after several more years in admin. After 5 months of training in NH, I became a software specialist --- not one of my smarter moves! Created several training courses for customers, but ended up moving back into admin where I eventually ended up as an Exec Admin. When my boss quit, he took me with him and I spent a year helping to get a new commission system up and running. He moved again to become CEO of a software company and brought me on as his exec. Unfortunately startup funding was pulled just before the company was to go public. After nearly 2 years of job hunting and temping, I was hired as an editor in the training department of Robert Half International..... and I stayed in that role until June 1, when I transferred to the Field Compensation department where I'll be working on the compensation plans and announcement materials.

Other than all that, I bought a home in Livermore after the divorce, and over the past couple of years, finally got around to some remodeling -- all new kitchen and new flooring downstairs. Then took on the back yard, which got a bit sidetracked last year when I broke my ankle! Hopefully I can finish the yard this summer, and then start to tackle the upstairs. Also managed a trip to Japan in 98 -- actually spent 3 days living with a family there, which was really interesting. And if anyone watched the last Amazing Race show, I was at the amusement park they were in for one of the challenges.... I'd have never managed their challenge though - I don't like roller-coasters and the one at that park held 7 of the 9 records when I was there.

New hobbies include working with polymer clay and recently I started making jewelry. It's gone over so well with my old group at work, am hoping to widen my clientele base and maybe work this into something that might allow me to retire before I'm 72!!!!! Would be nice to have that option.....

The fall of 1966 I enrolled in Sacramento City College. Having suffered a head injury while attending Sacramento City College in 1966, I was found to be unfit for the draft. After that I found myself drifting from one career to another career along with going back to college then dropping out and again returning to college, eventually finishing up at Chabot in 1977. In 1976 I went to work for a retail speciality chain starting out as a part time sales clerk and finally ending up as a District Sales Manager until the company and I parted ways in 1986 due to those 80's "buzz words" massive corporate cutbacks.

In 1987 I went to work for The United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Veteran's Benefits Administration. I stayed with Veterans Benefits until 2004 when I transferred to Veteran's Health because my wife had been transferred by her employer, Verizon Wireless, to Murfreesboro TN and no positions were available for me at the Nashville Regional Office. While working at the San Francisco Regional Office, I met and later married Crystal Duarte.

Crystal and I were married in a very small ceremony in September 1989 in State Line Nevada. Crystal finally convinced me to return to college and get my Bachelors Degree. I graduated from National-Louis University, Atlanta Academic Center, with a BA in Applied Behavioral Sciences in 1993. I returned to school in 1997 and ended up receiving a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from University of Phoenix, Online Campus in 1999.

I noticed that someone asked to state if you had crossed paths with anyone famous. Well I met Ronald and Nancy Reagan in 1966. Also when I worked in the Retail Specialty business I had a customer by the name of Robin Williams. I have also met one person who was more on the infamous side due to the Golden Dragon Massacre in San Francisco. I have seen and dealt with Melvin Yu many times before he went to San Quentin.

What does the future hold for me regarding retirement. My future is somewhat cloudy, I hope to be able to work as long as I can, however my health may force me to retire sooner than I would want to. In 2003 I was diagnosed with Non-Alcoholic Steato-Hepatitis (NASH), which means that I have non-alcoholic cirrossis of the liver and non-viral hepatitis.

The bottomline is that eventually I am going to need a liver transplant to keep on living. In my case I take each day looking for all the good that I can find and not trying to make it sound like I am looking for sympathy, because I am not asking for any sympathy. As one patient here in the hospital told me, you go from needing a transplant to getting the transplant along with living on a massive load of anti-rejection medication for the rest of your life.

But the good lord spared my life in 2003 when my Doctor ended up banding some esophageal varacies which could have burst and killed me. Why he spared my life, I don't know but since then I have had a feeling that I should be speaking out about the illness I have and how one can live even if you have the illness. As my Doctor tells me, most of his patients who have this illness just take a disability retirement and stay but I continue to go to work on a daily basis.

I was lost...but now I'm found. Al, take me off the "Missing Pirates" list. I hope to make it to the reunion in September. I see that Janice Hillblom and Claudette Fain have resurfaced...my old Washington Elementary chums..it would be great to see you again! I've lived the last 30 years or so in the Seattle area, where there's a Starbucks every other block, and love it here. I have a beautiful daughter, who is going to school forever...she's now in SF at the Academy of Art University, where she isstudying to be an interior design architect. My second husband, Carl and I live in a suburb of Seattle with our Lhasa Apso, Edgar, (named after retired Seattle Mariner, Edgar Martinez) where we enjoy hiking, biking, traveling the UW Huskies, Mariners baseball, and the Seahawks, who should have rightfully won the last Super Bowl. Never made it to Hollywood or Broadway. I've been an accountant for the last 30+ years with Arthur Andersen, a national concert company, and most recently a law firm. I'm in good health and spirit. Hope to see you all.
